Mux Mool – Hogknuckles (Alex B Remix) out on Ghostly Interntaional

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Free download of my Mux Mool “Hogknuckles” Remix available here

One of the more focused and hip-hop-leaning bangers from Brooklyn producer Mux Mool’s (pictured above) debut album, Skulltaste, is the crunchy “Hog Knuckles.” This version of that Dilla-referencing track, remixed by recent XLR8R podcast contributor and Colorado resident Alex B, comes from the Wax Rose Saturday EP, which dropped 8/31 via Ghostly. Alex B’s remix remains centered around the jittery bounce and sampled guitar melody of producer Brian Lindgren’s original beat, but is also given an extra dose of beat-scene slap and soulful synth timbres.

XLR8R PODCAST!

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

I recently did an exclusive Podcast for XLR8R Magazine. You can check it out here and see what they had to say!

LA might get all the shine for the burgeoning beat scene, but a few states over in Colorado, producer Alex B (a.k.a. Alex Botwin) has been quietly setting up an abstract, instrumental fiefdom of his own. (That’s why we recently tapped him to host the Denver edition of our ongoing City Guide series for XLR8R TV.) As head of Elm and Oak, which functions as a record label, design shop, and clothing line, Botwin’s talents aren’t limited to just beatmaking, although his debut album, Moments, certainly garnered plenty of attention when it dropped earlier this year. Next week, he’ll be setting off on a massive US tour—check the litany of dates here—and as a little preview, he’s assembled this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast. It’s a layered, at times psychedelic, journey through hip-hop beats, dubstep brawn, and bedroom-studio skronk that nicely showcases Botwin’s talents; as it happens, he either produced or remixed half the songs here. Throw in some unreleased gems from like-minded beat producers, and this podcast is poised to get any beat freak salivating.

XLR8R TV – DENVER CITY GUIDE! ALEX B x ELM&OAK

XLR8R TV City Guide: Denver

Gettin’ lifted in the Mile High City with Alex B.

While producer/label manager Alex B (né Botwin) might often get lumped in with Low End Theory’s abstract beat cats of Los Angeles, he’s a Colorado boy through and through. In this episode of XLR8R TV, he takes us for a trip through the kissing-cousin locales of Denver and Boulder to show us the region’s vegetarian delights, its vinyl havens, and its other unique wonders (Mexican-restaurant jazz clubs, anyone?).

Since 2002, XLR8R has produced in-depth city guides by talking to the people who know cities best: the musicians and artists responsible for creating vibrant local scenes. This episode also coincides with the release of the Denver edition of XLR8R’s City Guide iPhone application. To download the City Guide app, go to xlr8r.com/cityguide or type in “XLR8R Scion City Guide” in the iTunes app store.

LA Times!!!

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

The LA Times Music Blog did a preview of my show at Low End Theory tonight and had some great things to say!!

The bunker of Boulder, Colo.-based Alex B is (presumably) stashed somewhere in the pine-shrouded shadows of the Rocky Mountains, but Los Angeles operates as an alternative laboratory for his smoke-stained, broken beats. A fixture at Lincoln Heights’ Low End Theory, Alex Botwin dropped “Moments” on his own Elm & Oak imprint but turned to local imprint Alpha Pup for distribution — a wise move considering his fractured but funky sonics put him in line with peers like Nosaj Thing, Take, and Free the Robots.

Of course, Los Angeles’ emergence as a beat import and export hub is no longer a secret, with a recent Top 10 list from Thom Yorke dominated by Low End Theory-affiliated artists. And British dance music maven Mary Anne Hobbs just announced a monthlong “Volcano Refugee Party” in the city, hosting the next two weeks of her BBC1Xtra show with ministrations from the near-entirety of the Alpha Pup and Brainfeeder rosters.

Headlining Wednesday’s Low End Theory along with Ninja Tune-signed King Cannibal, Alex B might not sport a ZIP code that starts with “9-0,” but the West Coast sound is ingrained in his interstellar inclinations and ruthlessly blunted beats. In advance of the performance, Pop & Hiss is premiering “Getting to Know You,” a song that encompasses the breadth of “Moments” — a stunning collection of discrete sequences that lives up to its ambitious nomenclature.

Bookended by Lilla D’mone’s buoyant coo, “Getting to Know You” is partly trip-hop reinvented for the medical marijuana set, partly a phosphorous ball of energy, compacted with gently curving synths and giddy drum patterns. Like the album itself, it’s a wonderful contradiction: simultaneously despondent and danceable, brooding and brightly lit, the sort of record best listened to in the occult hours, buried underneath an avalanche of elements — whether chemical or climatic.

Alex B's "Moments"- Track listing, guest appearances, and Album Art

MomentsCover5x5

Anticipation has been running high for the release of Alex B’s debut full-length album Moments. Years of focused time in the studio and relentless touring all over the world have earned Alex his due recognition, with hype surrounding the rising producer growing daily.

The wait is almost over.  Moments is set to hit the streets April 6th on his own Elm&Oak imprint.

The tracks on Moments are intricately crafted with painstaking care and attention to detail — a careful mix of analog and digital sounds elevated by imaginative samples and the insight of a classically trained musician. The result is a blend of timeless warmth and future beats that is as easily adaptable to introspective time with one’s headphones as it is to group mania on a mobbed dance floor
